Hi everyone, I am Tommy Adrads. I am acorrespondence with CNN radio, but today I am filing in for Carl and hangingout with you for this Friday edition CNN student news.
First up, news in United Nation SecurityCouncil, the group voted yesterday for stronger punishment against North Korea. It's reaction to that country's latest rocket launches and nuclear test. It hasbeen a lot of attentions between North Korea and other countriesover its nuclear program, so that Security Council vote may not seem surprising. What is interesting is that it was unanimous. China, one of North Koreastrongest allies voted in favor of the punishments. These punishments aredesigned to change a country's potentially threatening behavior. Sometimes, they work. Other times, they don't really have much impact.
You might have heard about filibusters insocial study's class. We've talked about then before on our show. They are wayfor U.S.senator to block or delay a vote. On Wednesday, we actually saw one. Here'swhat happened. John Brennan is President Obama's nominee to run the CIA, butthe senate makes the final call. And Brennan is a controversial pick because ofhis connection to the use of drones. He has been advisor to the president onthe homeland security and counterterrorism issues. He is a big support of unmanaircraft. The President has been criticized for his position on dronesincluding the possibility that they could be used to target Americans who postthreat to United States.Senator Ran Paul wants more answers about the President's drone policies. OnWednesday, he used the filibuster to trying push for those answers. The way itworks is that when you get control of the senate floor. You don't give it up.
I rise today to begin to filibuster JohnBrennan's nomination for the CIA, I will until I can no longer speak, I willspeak as long as it takes. Has the America, the beautiful become Alice'sWonderland. "No, no", said the queen, "sentence first, verdictafterwards". "Stuff of nonsense", Alice said wildly, loudly, "the idea ofhaving the sentence first?" "Hold you tongue", said the queen, turning purple, "I won't", said Alice."Released the drones", said the queen, as she shouted at the top ofher voice. Lewis Carroll's fiction, right?
I have allowed the President to pick for hispolitical appointees. But I will not say it quietly and led him shred theconstitution. I can't sit in my desk quietly and lead the President say that hewill kill Americans on the American soil who are not actively attacking thecountry, which previously brought a challenging federal court to the legalityof the authorization to target. It would go for another 12 hours to try tobreak Strong Thurmond's record, but I've discovered that there are some limitsto filibustering in. I'm going to take care of one of those in a few minuteshere. I thank you very much for the forbearance, and I yield the floor.
Senator from Illinois.
Senator Paul has gotten some support andsome criticism for his filibuster. He also says he has gotten response from theWhite House. Yesterday, John Brennan was confirmed that next CIA director.
Next up, authorities at this cat havensanctuary are going to investigate a tragic accident that happened at the California facility onWednesday. An intern who works for the animals there was mauled and killed byone of sanctuary's African lions. It's just one example we've seen recently of potentialrisks when humans and creatures entry each other's habitats. When two partworkers in Floridaaccidently disturbed a hive, they were swarmed by tens and thousands ofAfricanized honey bees. That species is very aggressive, especially ifbothered. Men were stung nearly 100 time each. Thousands of sharks swimmingoffshore force some Floridabeaches to close. Experts say the sharks are after people, but going in thewater means you are entering there habitat. And in case mistake identity, ifthe shark thinks a person is a smaller fish could lead problems. And theseI-report images from Israelshow things going on the opposite direction. All those black specs, theylocusts and they migrating north in search of food when they come acrossfarmland areas where farmers are growing fruits and vegetables. The insects canattack the crops and leave them decimated.
